Wigs do not only come in all shapes and colors – they also come in different materials, qualities, and constructions. Here is a short guide to the different types of wigs to help you make the most educated choice in picking out the perfect wig.
What are Synthetic Wigs?
Synthetic wigs are the least expensive types of wigs, as they are made from synthetic materials such as acrylic and nylon. They can be pre-styled upon purchase, and dyed to match your hair color if needed. Synthetic wigs are made by machines and mass-produced, making them quite durable. However, avoid exposing your synthetic wig to high temperatures, as the fibers can melt easily. Special wigs are available to buy that can be blow-dried and curled with hot irons. Synthetic wigs have a lifespan of about three to six months.
What are Natural Wigs?
Natural wigs are wigs that can be made from a variety of natural hairs, such as human hair, horsehair, buffalo hair, or wool. These tend to be of higher quality, so they are often more expensive than synthetic wigs. The hairs are first treated to a base solution, partially dissolving the outer cortex. It is then bleached to remove the original color, then dyed to the desired color. Finally, a synthetic resin finish is applied to restore the hair’s natural strength and luster.
When they’re made well, human hair wigs are the best quality wigs available on the market. When not made well, the hairs can become frizzy, tangled easily, and unrealistic-looking. High quality natural wigs are hand-tied with confirmative strands that all point in the same direction, making them very easy to style. The less expensive natural wigs are made by machines with less attention to detail, so the hairs don’t all run in the same direction.
What are Remy Hair Wigs?
These are wigs made of human hair that keep the hair cuticle intact. The hair isn’t processed, so these wigs are sometimes called “cut hair” or “virgin hair” wigs. Remy hair wigs, similarly to hand-died natural wigs, have been made with all the hairs facing in a uniform direction. Because they are unprocessed, they feel softer and are less prone to tangling. They also retain most of their natural strength, so they’re quite durable and long-lasting.
What Are Different Types of Wig Construction?
From machine made to handmade, wigs have a variety of construction methods. Each technique has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to learn about each and make an educated decision when looking at a certain wig for purchase.
Stock wigs are made from synthetic fibers and are machine-made and mass-produced. The fibers are typically sewn onto wefts, then sewn onto the cap. Semi-custom wigs can be made of synthetic or natural hairs, and are made partially by machine and partially hand-tied. The cap has a solid weft, while the sides have fine mesh net. Custom made wigs also come in both synthetic and natural hairs. However, they are made of a flexible mesh net and are completely hand-tied. Custom wigs are made to a customer’s precise measurements.
Stock wigs are the cheapest type of wig and come in pre-cut styles. Semi-custom and custom-made wigs are the highest quality wigs and are usually found in specialty shops and salons like ours.
