Options for Thinning Hair

thinning-hair.jpg

Thinning hair and hair loss are most commonly caused by genetics in both men and women. Things like your diet, stress levels, medications, illnesses, and even your cosmetic habits can also play big roles. For example, if you tend to wear very tight ponytails or buns, or style your hair in a way that pulls at your scalp, you’ll likely experience some degree of hair loss or thinning hair. Thankfully, there are several options for you to take to decrease or reverse the effects of thinning hair.

Medication:

There are currently two drugs that are approved by the FDA to treat thinning hair and hair loss. The first is called Rogaine, which is statistically better at slowing down hair loss than actually helping with hair growth. The second is called Propecia, which comes in the form of a pill and must be prescribed by your doctor. This is an effective treatment, but your results may not necessarily be maintained if you stop taking it.

Hair Transplant/Hair Grafting:

This procedure uses various methods to graft, or transplant, hair onto your scalp. It’s performed by a dermatological surgeon, and is a good option if you are interested in hair replacement. The specific procedure may vary depending on your circumstances and needs. Hair grafting or transplanting results in natural-grown hair and is relatively easy, with a quick recovery time.

Scalp Reduction:

A more intensive option than the simpler hair transplant, scalp reduction is a procedure that essentially removes areas of your scalp that aren’t growing hair as desired, so that areas where your hair growth is fuller can be stretched. This is more suitable for those with loss of hair than just thinning hair.

Hair Pieces:

The quickest way to get a head of full, thick hair is to purchase a hair piece. Hair pieces are available to blend in to your own grown hair, so you can still have a great natural look! There are many types of options with hair pieces, so we recommend researching what would be the best fit for you. Our hair technicians are always happy to answer your questions.

You may have heard of many “natural” options to treat thinning hair or hair loss, but many experts agree that these “natural remedies” make false promises. If you’re interesting in treating your thinning hair or hair loss, we offer a free consultation to help you determine what option is right for you! Call our office today at 800-966-9505.
