How to Care for Human Hair Wigs

Hormones Present in our Food Affect Hair Loss

Our health is at risk, but the source of worry is well hidden and under-challenged: it’s the hormones present in our food, and the effects are felt by men, women, and children alike. From self-esteem debilitating issues like hair loss and early puberty to potentially fatal health problems like breast cancer and prostate cancer, hormones in our food could be posing a huge crisis for the future of our health and wellness.

Unfortunately, there’s very little research going on to dig into the heart of this problem. The research done by the FDA is conveniently inconclusive at best, and at worst the FDA has even concluded that the hormone amounts present in our food is considered negligible. In other words, “Don’t worry about it.” However, some hormones used in our food are referred to as probably carcinogens by the National Institutes of Health. Estrogen (present in dairy) has been linked with breast cancer, testosterone (present in red meats) has been linked with prostate cancer, and the hormone progesterone increases the growth of breast, ovarian, and uterine tumors.

food-effect-2.jpgThe genetically engineered growth hormone called rBGH (used on cattle) was even banned in Europe and Canada due to the concerns that arose for animal welfare and human health. Yet in the United States, the FDA approves the hormone and claims it presents no risk to human health. Interestingly, there is also very little we can know about the illegal use of hormones, because the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) does not test animals for natural hormones, and only does sporadic testing for synthetic hormones. It clearly isn’t enough, because in 1999 an organization of more rigorous testers in Europe detected a drug called diethylstilbestrol (DES) in two shipments of US beef. DES was banned by the FDA in 1959 as a growth promoter in chicken and lambs, and again in 1979 for use in all animal feed.

The European Union has completely banned the use of growth hormones, while the EU’s Scientific Committee for Veterinary Measures has clearly stated that all growth hormones used in the US could pose the risk of cancer.

Meanwhile, the hormones present in our food also affect hair loss. Diets rich in animal fats are shown to cause excessive testosterone, which directly impacts hair loss. This is because oil glands in the hair follicle begin to grow, and the production of DHT is increased. DHT is a hormone that results from the breakdown of testosterone, and it’s widely accepted as the principal cause of hair loss.

Ultimately, if you’re worried about the health concerns of hormones in your food, it may be best to change your diet. For example, you can purchase organic meats that state no hormones were used on the animal, and you can even increase your consumption of foods that help lower DHT levels. If hair loss is a primary concern, a diet change alone will probably not reverse your hair loss, so other measures such as hair growth therapy and hair replacement would be beneficial to work in tandem with your altered diet. Propecia’s sales are now at over 400 million dollars annually, making it one of the top sellers of the pharmaceutical company Merck. Unfortunately for hundreds of thousands of patients taking Propecia, Merck failed to disclose just how serious and long-lasting certain side effects of Propecia can be: namely, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and inability to orgasm.

This has resulted in hundreds of lawsuits in the US and Canada. Patients have reported that Propecia’s side effects could even last an average of 40 months after discontinued use of the drug. How to Care for Different Textured Hair

Today, let’s talk about how to care for the three main hair types: straight, wavy, and curly. We’ll also be covering how to care for dyed hair. All four types of hair textures are unique, and need different methods of maintenance in order to bring out their best qualities.

Straight Hair

  1. Wash fine hair often, such as every other day. Natural oils will only weight it down, making it limper.
  2. Don’t condition your roots. Conditioner is meant to smooth and moisturize the hair, but your scalp already produces natural oils. Adding more will only flatten your hair at the roots, minimizing volume! Condition the ends of your hair and up to about ear-level for best results.
  3. Try blow-drying your fine hair upside down. By flipping your hair over, you’ll give it extra lift at the roots and add volume!
  4. Avoid using too many products, such as mousses and gels. These will just weigh your hair down. However, try experimenting with light texturizing sprays, like sea salt spray, to give your hair that extra boost.
  5. Use your fingers or a metal fine-tooth comb to detangle or brush your hair. The metal comb won’t give your hair static, unlike plastic combs!

Wavy Hair

  1. Don’t cleanse your hair too often. Your hair’s natural oils accentuate your waves, so if you wash it too much your hair will dry out, tangle, or frizz.
  2. Avoid drying your hair with terrycloth towels, which are rough on your hair. Instead, try using a microfiber towel. Let your hair air-dry. You can also use a towel to pat or scrunch-dry your hair.
  3. Use only alcohol-free styling products, and avoid greasy or oily products. They can cause your hair to tangle and break!
  4. Use your fingers or a fine-tooth comb to detangle hair while it’s damp.
  5. Spray your hair with leave-in conditioner, plain water, or diluted curl activator to refresh your waves. Be careful not to use these products too frequently, or product build-up will tangle your hair!

Curly Hair

  1. Shampoo your curly hair at most every other day, or skip it altogether! We recommend just using a cleansing conditioner, which will wash and moisturize your hair without damaging or drying it out with detergents.
  2. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to style your hair while it’s still damp.
  3. Apply your products before you’ve even toweled off. This will help you prevent frizz or stiff curls. Gently use your fingers to apply products through your wet hair, starting from the roots to the tips.
  4. Avoid products with alcohol – they will give your hair a dry, crunch texture!
  5. Don’t handle your curls too much. Avoid toweling dry with terrycloth and use a microfiber cloth to simply pat dry. Furthermore, don’t comb your dry curls! This will result in a disruption of the curl pattern, causing the hair to frizz.

Dyed Hair

  1. Use a mild shampoo and moisturizing conditioner specifically for color-treated hair. Dyed hair can be very dry, so make sure to nurture it.
  2. Only shampoo your scalp, and use the conditioner everywhere but the scalp. Our scalps are already rich in natural oils, so that’s where we cleanse. It doesn’t need additional moisturizing.
  3. Rinse your hair in cold water. We know this can be unpleasant, but hot water will dry out your hair and skin. Cold water helps keep the color in your hair, and it also improves its overall shine and health.
  4. If your dyed hair is unnatural or particularly vibrant – such as bright purples, reds, pinks, blues, or greens – try to avoid long-term sun exposure. Sunlight will naturally bleach your hair.
  5. Re-dye your hair about once 4-6 weeks. Any more than this and you will risk hair that splits, tangles, and breaks.

From machine made to handmade, wigs have a variety of construction methods. Each technique has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to learn about each and make an educated decision when looking at a certain wig for purchase.
