Does Hair Dye Cause Hair Loss?

One of the most often-asked questions is, “Can dying my hair cause it to fall out?” The easy answer is, no. If you use hair dye products that are sold in a reputable store and contain safe ingredients or visit a licensed salon, you should not experience hair loss from dying your hair.

Hair dye does contain chemicals that can damage your hair follicles or your scalp and cause hair loss if used incorrectly or over-used. Dying your hair can cause breakage which will ultimately result in hair loss. However, all hair, dyed or natural is prone to some breakage. Dying your hair should not cause hair loss unless you use incorrect products during or after the process.

So, what exactly does happen to your hair when you dye it? Hair dyes use chemicals to bond the new color to your hair (both externally and internally) and that means your hair must be penetrated by the chemicals. There is a difference between dying your hair darker or lighter. Going darker tends to do less damage to your hair follicles, where as, the peroxide used to go lighter can be more destructive.

Ultimately, coloring your hair will not cause hair loss because your hair is already dead! Once your hair grows past the follicle it is dead and no longer growing. Growth occurs from underneath your scalp where the hair is alive beneath the skin’s surface. This is also where the root (no pun intended) of hair loss can result. Your hair bulb can be affected by chemicals or hormones in your blood which can result in hair loss. However, since dying your hair only affects the hair on the surface, it doesn’t result in hair loss.

If you feel that your hair is getting damaged by your hair dye, ask your colorist to try an ammonia-free option. Ammonia is used to make it easier for the dye to seep into your hair, but it can also strip hair of natural nutrients which in turn weakens the hair.

In general, hair dye doesn’t make your hair fall out, however, everybody is different and there could be a reason the dye you’ve used to color your hair is causing breakage or thinning.
