How Stress Can Affect Hair Loss

High stress levels and hair loss can be related. In general, there’s 3 types of hair loss that are usually associated with high stress:

Telogen effluvium: With telogen effluvium, major stress can push high numbers of your hair follicles into a resting phase. After a few months of this, affected hairs may fall out suddenly when washing or combing your hair.

Alopecia areata: Multiple factors are thought to cause alopecia areata, including severe stress. The body’s immune system attacks your hair follicles, causing hair to fall out and resulting in bald patches.

Trichotillomania: If you have an overwhelming urge to pull your hair out from your scalp, you may be suffering from trichotillomania. Hair pulling can be an outlet for dealing with uncomfortable or negative feelings like tension, boredom, frustration, stress or loneliness.

If you’re experiencing mild hair loss, it’s most likely due to telogen effluvium or even stress-weakened hair. But a small percentage of hair loss sufferers can experience alopecia or trichotillomania.
