How to Manage Your Wigs and Hairpieces When It’s Humid?

Humidity is no fun when you want to have a nice, fun hairstyle to go out in. The moisture in the air causes real hair to frizz if it’s too dry, or to go limp, which makes all that time you put into styling your hair go to waste!

Fortunately for people who wear wigs or hairpieces, synthetic hair is a great option. Unlike natural hair wigs, the hair strands of a synthetic piece won’t react to the increased moisture in the air as easily. Because of this reason, it’s not uncommon for people to own both natural hair and synthetic hair wigs. Switching between different hair pieces helps to extend the life of your pieces – and it adds some variety to your hairstyle choices, too!

If switching hair pieces is not for you, here are some options to manage your hair during humid weather. Luckily, it’s not too different from what stylists would normally use on every day human hair as well.

Use only hair products that contain no alcohol

Hair products that use natural oils are gaining popularity, and for good reason. Alcohol strips the hair dry, which makes it easier to frizz during humidity. You also shouldn’t wash your hair pieces too often, due to this reason as well.

Choose a humidity-friendly hair style

Opt to style your hair up in a ponytail, braid, or bun your hair while it’s wet to minimize the frizziness. (Remember not to pull too much on your scalp when creating this style to avoid damaging the hair or risk making your hair loss worse.) Also, try not to go for styles that use a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron – the added heat will clean the moisture out of your hair making it more susceptible to the effects of humidity.

Use hydrating shampoo, and shampoo infrequently

Washing your hair too often can do more harm than good, so it’s best to space out your shampooing so that you can have clean hair but not dried up hair. There are shampoos and conditioners on the market especially formulated to fight frizziness, and which add hydration back into your hair.

Apply anti-frizz hair serum after washing

Using a serum is a great way to add moisture back into your hair and help reduce frizzing. Some products may contain silicone, and that’s okay, but just be mindful that it can weigh your hair down (which may be okay if the style you want calls for it).

There are many serums on the market. It’s always good to pick several that fit in your budget and try out each for at least a week and see which ones do well for you and your lifestyle. Serums also work great on synthetic hairs, if you’re looking for that added climate protection.

Get layers added to your hair

If your wig is long and straight with only one length, then consider taking your wig to a stylist to add layers. This won’t necessarily aid in the fight against humidity, but it will add interest and volume to your hair without additional styling, decreasing your need to add more product or heat to your hair.
