Going through chemo? Don't go it alone and find a support group

chemo_1.jpg

Every week, we meet more and more chemotherapy patients looking to cover their hair loss by wearing natural looking wigs to help cope with the process of undergoing such a treatment. They are strong, inspiring individuals, and we are happy to serve them as clients.

However, people are an emotional species, and we realize how tough it is for these patients. Often times they visit HRC with other family members or friends as moral support. They walk away with a new set of hair on their head feeling empowered, ready to face the world again. And while human hair wigs  can provide a way for patients to regain confidence, it can never replace the bonds people can share with each other.

Our patients have found that joining support groups or clubs in Los Angeles have really assisted them in handling their emotions. They are able to off-load some of the turmoil onto each other and provide support, as they are all facing the same battles.

For most patients, hair loss usually occurs a few weeks after treatment. People come into our location anticipating their desire for a hair solution before the hair loss is too noticeable. Our clients have said that the HRC hairpieces help them regain control of their image, thus keeping up their confidence and management of the situation.

But even then, having a group of people who share your journey around you can help immensely. Some groups not only offer networking with other patients, but also education for you and your loved ones. We’ve collected a list of a few outstanding support groups and clubs in the Los Angeles area that you may want to connect with:

  1. The group at Good Samaritan Hospital meet every second Saturday of the month
  2. Luzca Bien…Siéntase Mejor (Look Good...Feel Better) is a bilingual (Spanish/English) women’s club that offers support through their community, beauty lessons, and more. (They have multiple locations around the U.S., including Los Angeles and Orange County)
  3. Want to meet online instead? There are several options for connecting with other cancer patients and survivors through some of these networks.

HRC may be just a hair restoration center, but we’ve worked with many inspirational people in the community. We can provide you peace of mind that you’ve decided on the best hair replacement studio in Los Angeles. Our staff is sensitive and educated to help cancer patients make the best decision for their hair needs.

Contact us now to see a variety of handmade human and synthetic wigs or hairpieces that we can provide you with during treatment. HRC can deliver most of these human hair wigs within 7-10 days and provide you a fantastic stylist to cut and style your wig.

4 Vitamins and Minerals for Healthier Hair

Dietary changes and certain supplements have been prescribed for people with health issues for a long time, and people with chronic hair loss are no exception. While vitamins and minerals alone cannot restore hair to its fullest, it's still important to concern yourself with health to positively impact your hair.

Although supplements and multivitamins are great ways to get the nutrients you need daily, they are not a substitute for a healthy diet. Eating foods rich in these vitamins is the best way to get your recommended intake. Taking these pills however is still beneficial, as long as you take the right dosage. Check this wonderful article on multivitamins and see if it's right for you.

  • Vitamin D: Recent studies have highlighted a correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and hair loss, particularly in women. This vitamin is known to help with the health of hair follicles. Getting vitamin D is as simple as standing out in the sun, but if you're sensitive to UV rays, the n try eating mushrooms, fatty fish or egg yolk.
  • Vitamin B complex: A fancy way of describing all water-soluble vitamins (except C), vitamin B is known to have a variety of health benefits. One of them is to promote healthy skin, nails and shiny hair. While all the different variations of B are found in a large array of food, try focusing on nuts, brown rice, eggs and green vegetables.
  • Iron: When it comes to restoring hair growth, iron seems to play a big role. While having an iron deficiency doesn't necessarily mean hair loss, not having enough iron in your blood can make it worse. Try eating more meat, egg yolk (noticing a trend here?) and dark leafy greens for the best impact.
  • Zinc: The last mineral in the alphabetical array of nutrients should not be last on your list. Zinc also provides a variety of benefits, and can be easily found in red meats, poultry, fish, whole wheats and dairy. Did you know that there are actually shampoos that contain zinc? It's that good for hair restoration.

However you decide to get your nutrients, remember to always consult with a doctor to ensure your health.

Looking for hair loss treatment opportunities in Los Angeles, while plentiful, can be confusing. While a quick search on Yelp will pull up many vitamin shops and restaurants with tons of leafy greens, finding a hair care doctor should be easy. The staff here at HRC in Los Angeles are extremely knowledgeable and eager to help you with your hair restoration needs. So, contact us today for a free hair consultation appointment.
