Going through chemo? Don't go it alone and find a support group

chemo_1.jpg

Every week, we meet more and more chemotherapy patients looking to cover their hair loss by wearing natural looking wigs to help cope with the process of undergoing such a treatment. They are strong, inspiring individuals, and we are happy to serve them as clients.

However, people are an emotional species, and we realize how tough it is for these patients. Often times they visit HRC with other family members or friends as moral support. They walk away with a new set of hair on their head feeling empowered, ready to face the world again. And while human hair wigs  can provide a way for patients to regain confidence, it can never replace the bonds people can share with each other.

Our patients have found that joining support groups or clubs in Los Angeles have really assisted them in handling their emotions. They are able to off-load some of the turmoil onto each other and provide support, as they are all facing the same battles.

For most patients, hair loss usually occurs a few weeks after treatment. People come into our location anticipating their desire for a hair solution before the hair loss is too noticeable. Our clients have said that the HRC hairpieces help them regain control of their image, thus keeping up their confidence and management of the situation.

But even then, having a group of people who share your journey around you can help immensely. Some groups not only offer networking with other patients, but also education for you and your loved ones. We’ve collected a list of a few outstanding support groups and clubs in the Los Angeles area that you may want to connect with:

  1. The group at Good Samaritan Hospital meet every second Saturday of the month
  2. Luzca Bien…Siéntase Mejor (Look Good...Feel Better) is a bilingual (Spanish/English) women’s club that offers support through their community, beauty lessons, and more. (They have multiple locations around the U.S., including Los Angeles and Orange County)
  3. Want to meet online instead? There are several options for connecting with other cancer patients and survivors through some of these networks.

HRC may be just a hair restoration center, but we’ve worked with many inspirational people in the community. We can provide you peace of mind that you’ve decided on the best hair replacement studio in Los Angeles. Our staff is sensitive and educated to help cancer patients make the best decision for their hair needs.

Contact us now to see a variety of handmade human and synthetic wigs or hairpieces that we can provide you with during treatment. HRC can deliver most of these human hair wigs within 7-10 days and provide you a fantastic stylist to cut and style your wig.

How to take care of your human hair pieces

b2ap3_thumbnail_H8.jpg

We’re not going to lie, taking care of the custom hair pieces on your own without professional help can be more difficult than taking care of your own hair -- however, it doesn’t have to be hard or time-consuming. HRC offers a full styling staff with two locations to help you and assist with having great hair. Human hair extensions require specialized attention, but taking small steps to keep them up will make them last you for a long time.

Luckily, today’s hair pieces come in many different colors and styles to fit your natural look, or to compliment a style you’re looking to achieve. We here at HRC have a variety of options for our clients, for both men and women with hairloss. HRC can custom design you the best hair pieces or hair replacement using the finest human hair available.

When you implement these simple tasks into your daily routine, taking care of your hairpiece will be a snap.

Find a hairstylist you trust and has experience with hair extensions. If this is your first time with hair replacement, then you’ll need some guidance and a helping hand through this experience. You’ll be seeing your stylist often, as the hair system may get loose and will need readjusting over time.

Consider the style you want before buying your hair pieces. Most people prefer to get the color and style that match what they naturally have, however, you can also opt to get hair pieces that match the style you want.

Use the hair dryer on the low setting. Human hair pieces can withstand much more heat than synthetic hair pieces, but heat in general is damaging to any hair. While your natural hair will grow to replace hair that’s been blown out, hair pieces obviously can’t. Extend the life of your extensions by blow drying the pieces when you’re trying to style it.

Wash and condition your hair. Most people will simply wash their hair with shampoo, and generally that’s okay. But if you’ve had hair replacement, it’s even more important that you also condition your hair. Like we just stated, your hair won’t grow, so you should keep your hairpieces healthy with conditioner. Both leave-in conditioner and the ones you use in the shower are fine, but be sure to not overdo it, because too much conditioner can leave build-up in your hair.

If you have removable hair pieces, store them neatly, away from the sun and other items, when you’re not using them. If you remove your hair extensions and want to store them away for future use, consider laying them out flat on a hand towel, and wrap the towel long-ways around the hair. If you put them in a drawer or if they’re out, the towel will keep the hair strands from tangling, and will protect it in the event something spills on it.

Make it routine. Knowing in advance that you’ll need to set aside time every morning and night to care for your hair, will make it easier for you to motivate yourself. Keep a tight schedule, and caring for your hair will become part of your daily routine.

If you’re still trying to understand what hair replacement solution is right for you, we’ve got you covered. Contact us today for a free hair and scalp consultation.

Hair Loss Specialist Los Angeles: 8 Interesting Facts About Human Hair

b2ap3_thumbnail_8Interesting.jpg

Hair is fascinating, and just as fascinating are some of these facts that the hair loss specialists at HRC in Los Angels have found and learned in our experiences. From hair growth to hair loss, these interesting tidbits are great conversation starters!

  1. Hair is the second fastest growing tissue in the body.

It’s second only to bone marrow. While race and gender play a role in how fast hair grows, it’s often quoted that hair grows about 6in/15cm per year.

  1. Blondes have more hair.

Blondes may or may not have more fun, but they have more hair, at about 130,000 strands compared to brunettes at 100,000. Also, a new scientific study claims that blonde women also have more estrogen.

  1. Beards can help protect against skin cancer.

It’s true that beards are back in vogue for men for style, but it seems there’s an added benefit -- it protects the skin against harmful UVs, cutting exposure to almost one-third.

  1. Gender and age cannot be determined by a hair strand.

Despite what you may have seen in CSI, hair strands can’t tell forensic scientists (without the root, from common hair loss or hair that’s been cut) what age or sex the hair came from (although general age determination, like an infant or a senior, stands).

  1. Hair dye and bleach cause only temporary hair loss.

It’s a standard notion that excessive hair coloring treatment can lead to hair loss for both men and women, however, it’s only temporary. The chemicals may cause your hair to become brittle and break off, but hair dye won’t give you bald patches or pattern baldness. We still recommend that you get your hair professionally colored.

  1. You CAN color hair with human hair extensions.

With professional help, it is very possible to dye your hair even if you have hair extensions. Keep in mind however that most hair pieces come with the hair already chemically-treated, so be sure to make your stylist aware of that. Some patch tests may need to occur before a full color treatment.

  1. Studies have linked heart disease to male baldness.

Many claim that just because there’s correlation between two events, doesn’t mean one signifies the other. However, this study on male pattern baldness and coronary heart disease is too significant to ignore -- the team found that “balding men had a 70% higher risk of having heart disease, while those in younger age groups had an 84% elevated chance.” If you’re a man experiencing hair loss, particularly in the frontal and crown-top areas, it’s important to discuss with your doctor the state of your cardiovascular health.

  1. Only 1% of the entire world’s population have red hair.

13% of the Scottish population has red hair, making it the highest proportion of redheads in the world. And in the U.S., there are more number of people with red hair than anywhere in the world.

While there are many facts about hair loss, this one fact remains: the professional, trained staff at HRC can help you with your hair needs, from laser hair therapy to Virtual Reality and Virtuésse, a non-surgical method for hair restoration. The Best Hairstyles from the 86th Academy Awards

The red carpet at the Oscars 2014 in Los Angeles have never looked better, and the hair that graced the screens were no exception. From Jared Leto to Cate Blanchett, the nominated (and winning) actors and actresses once again employed stellar Hollywood hair stylists that will set the trend for 2014.

As they say, all "nominees" are winners in our book! HRC has kept their eyes glued to the screen looking for amazing hairstyles. Here are our four favorites:

At age 67, the legendary actress who we all "really really love" looked amazing in her gown, but what really blew us away was her full hair. A classic, layered haircut that was perfectly framed to her face, Sally Field wowed us with healthy-looking hair. Giving a very inspirational speech only moved us even more.

To achieve her hairstyle, you could use hair pieces underneath your hair to give a full, voluminous look. Add just a few, big curls tossed with some light hairspray, and you've got this classic look. See the variety of hair extensions options available to you from HRC.

Long hair for men is back in style this year, but one guy that particularly stood out was Dallas Buyer's Club Oscar-winning supporting actor, Jared Leto. We were definitely moved by his speech dedicated to his loving mother, but no one could get over the fact that this 42-year-old man wore long hair better than some of the women!

To achieve his sunkissed-ombre (or a manbre as some would call it) locks, men could add hair pieces or extensions to their hair. But since most men tend to lose hair at the top, you should try virtual reality hair, which is a hair replacement method that involves no surgery, and is much used in Hollywood and by other hair elites. Click here to get more information on this revolutionary technique.

Baby-bump-friendly gowns took to the red carpet this year, with Scandal actress Kerry Washington looking luxurious with a nice, full head of hair. It's not uncommon for women to have healthy hair during pregnancy, as the rise of estrogen promotes hair growth. However, after delivery, it is common for women to experience hair loss. Telogen effluvium, the second most common form of hair loss seen by dermatologists, occurs normally 1-5 months after pregnancy, when estrogen levels fall back to normal.

Kerry Washington showed up with a half-up/half-down hair style, with nice curls at the bottom. Try adding hair extensions to your hair to give your style a full look like hers. If you want to curl it, be sure to get natural hair extensions (like we use) instead of synthetic, as those would be damaged if you put hot metal to them.

Just because hair is short, doesn't mean that hair can't be styled. Supporting actor nominee for 12 Years a Slave, Michael Fassbender showed men everywhere that you can sport a messy look with short hair without looking like a California beach bum. On top of that (or rather, at the bottom of his look), Michael sports a full, great-looking beard, which is also coming back into style these days.

Men with hair loss who get virtual reality hair with us at HRC can also get this look and style it the same way as if it was your own hair. Read more about it here.
