7 Totally Random Facts about Wigs

7_Totally_Random_Facts_about_Wigs_1.jpg

If you live in Los Angeles, you’ve most likely seen your fair share of wigs. Wigs are very common in Hollywood, as many movies and scenes will call for specific hairstyles that sometimes cannot be achieved with the actors’ real hair. One glance at Mad Men, and you’ll know what we’re talking about.

The staff at HRC know hair, and they know wigs. Here are just a few things we’ve learned in our experiences that we’d like to share with you.

  • The word wig is short for periwig and appeared in the English language around 1675.
  • In the 16th century, it was thought that shaving one’s natural hair and replacing it with a wig is the best defense against lice. It was also the first time we would see wigs used to help cover up hair loss.
  • Fake-hair wigs are usually made of yak hair, for their durability and strength.
  • The wax figures at Madame Tussauds do not have wigs, but rather real human hair is applied directly on the figure itself. It also must be kept washed and cleaned regularly.
  • Most human hair wigs are made up of Chinese or Indian hair, since the strands tend to be thicker and straighter. European hair is generally more expensive.
  • Dolly Parton has a lot of wigs. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she said, “I have at least 365. One for each day. I do wear wigs all the time because it’s so handy and I’m always so busy. I really enjoy wearing the wigs.”
  • In the United States, only the first five Presidents, from George Washington to James Monroe, wore powdered wigs.
