If you’ve checked out the top hair trends for men in 2018, then you’ll notice that voluminous hair is in. Not only that, but hair that has volume looks healthier and gives you more options for styling.
It is important to note that the process for adding volume is different for men who wear hairpieces, but it doesn’t mean it’s harder! If your piece or wig is made of synthetic hair, then the most important difference is that you shouldn’t use heating tools like a blow dryer or flat iron, as they could damage your hair. Of course, even on real human hair, heating tools are often damaging to your hair if it isn’t protected by some kind of serum.
After you’ve used one of the methods below to create volume, it’s critical that you use some kind of styling product that doesn’t weigh down your hair. We’ll provide some suggestions at the end.
Using a blow dryer
Using this tool is probably the most popular way to add volume to your hair. Again, if you’re wearing synthetic hair, it is highly suggested you skip this and go for the next method.
Before you expose your hair to potentially damaging heat, you should apply some kind of heat protectant product to your hair or hairpieces. They come either as a serum, cream, or spray.
After applying your protectant, take a comb and grab a small chunk of hair, and point the dryer in the opposite direction of where your hair naturally lays. So if your hair lays to the front, you should point the dryer so that the wind goes back behind you. This will help your hair stand up, giving you the volume you’re looking for.
Using dry volumizing powder
This is likely the best option for men who wear wigs or hairpieces with synthetic hair. But even if you don’t have synthetic hair, this is still a great product to try.
Also called texture powder, this looks and feels a little like baby powder. You apply it directly to the roots of your hair, massaging it into your scalp and the roots of your hair, then move up the hair strands to add lift to them. After the powder sets in, you can then style your hair with volumizing hairspray to give it the shape you’re looking for.
Using volumizing hairspray
Using hairspray is generally advised to be applied after the previous two methods, but oftentimes when you’re busy and need a quick fix, this alone could work! On its own, this method may not hold your style for as long as it could when used alongside a blow dryer or texture powder, but it’s great for when you’re preparing for a quick meeting and need to get out the door fast.
Using your comb, bring small pieces of your hair up and spray from the roots up along the strands. After applying to the places where you want volume, you can use the comb to shape your hair to the style you want.
Keep in mind that using fingers to style your hair may weigh down the style later in the day. The oils from your fingers may transfer to your hair, which can make style up-keep more difficult later on.
If you have stubborn or synthetic hair, you might want to try applying a serum or hair lotion before using hairspray. There’s also volumizing shampoo and conditioner products that you could use in the mornings to help build more body to your hair.
Find what works for you
No matter your hair type, the hairpiece you use, or the time you have, you’ll have plenty of options! The key is to try different methods to see what works for you. Some men even apply their product before bed so that it has overnight to set.
Even if the style you’re looking to achieve doesn’t necessarily need a lot of volume, these options can give lift to your hair and add some life and movement to it.
