When the hair loss treatment Propecia hit the market, it quickly became known as a miracle drug for men who suffered from male pattern baldness. Suddenly, it was a blockbuster treatment that was touted for being less messy and more effective than Rogaine. Propecia’s sales are now at over 400 million dollars annually, making it one of the top sellers of the pharmaceutical company Merck. Unfortunately for hundreds of thousands of patients taking Propecia, Merck failed to disclose just how serious and long-lasting certain side effects of Propecia can be: namely, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and inability to orgasm.
This has resulted in hundreds of lawsuits in the US and Canada. Patients have reported that Propecia’s side effects could even last an average of 40 months after discontinued use of the drug. What’s more, serious sexual dysfunction wasn’t the only serious risk of taking Propecia – other side effects include difficulty breathing, depression, anxiety attacks, loss of concentration, insomnia, memory loss, and an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer.
These lawsuits allege that the medication – also marketed as “Proscar” – has devastating sexual, emotional, and mental side effects that last for years after the men stop taking it. They claim that Merck failed to adequately warn users about the risks, even after European regulators demanded for a stronger warning label. Merck has made a statement that some users of Propecia experience erectile dysfunction, but the company still won’t say how long the side effects last and if those issues worsen over time.
